A turnbuckle is a mechanical device used to adjust the length or tension of ropes, cables, or rods.
A turnbuckle typically consists of a threaded body with right-hand threads on one end and left-hand threads on the other end. Each end is attached to a hook, eye, or other type of connector. This unique design with opposite threads allows for a special kind of adjustment mechanism.
The turnbuckle works by rotating the central body. When you turn the body, the two ends, which have different threaded directions, either move closer together or farther apart. Rotating the turnbuckle in one direction pulls the connectors together, shortening the overall length and increasing tension. Rotating it in the opposite direction increases the length and reduces tension.
